چکیده

Networked technologies supporting distributed 3D visualization and social collaboration will be increasing in frequency and type over time. An emerging type of headmounted display referred to as the Head-Mounted Projection Display (HMPD) was recently developed to only require ultra-light optics (i.e. less than 8 g per eye) that enables immersive multi-user, mobile augmented reality 3D visualization, as well as remote 3D distributed collaborations. In this paper a review of the development of light-weight HMPD technology is provided, together with insight into what makes this technology so unique. Two novel emerging HMPD-based technologies are then described: a teleportal HMPD (T-HMPD) enabling face-toface communication and visualization of 3D shared virtual objects, and a mobile HMPD (MHMPD) designed for outdoor wearable visualization and communication. Finally, the use of HMPD in medical visualization and training, as well as infospaces, two applications developed in the O.D.A. and M.I.N.D Labs respectively, are discussed.

Projection-based Augmented Reality in Engineering Applications

Augmented Reality (AR) superimposes computer-generated graphics onto the user's view of the real world. Today, AR applications can occasionally be found in the late phases of the product development process (PDP), such as in training and in maintenance. Head-mounted displays (HMDs) are typically used for AR applications. HMDs still show deficiencies in terms of ergonomics and image quality. Loo...

Multiple Head Mounted Displays in Virtual and Augmented Reality Applications

With the recent introduction of low cost head mounted displays (HMDs), prices of HMD-based virtual reality setups dropped considerably. In various application areas personal head mounted displays can be utilized for groups of users to deliver different context sensitive information to individual users. We present a hardware setup that allows attaching 12 or more HMDs to a single PC. Finally we ...

DIY Head Mounted Displays Moving Towards Augmented Reality

The field of Augmented Reality (AR) is growing rapidly. Many of the options available now are very expensive, which is limiting to development of applications of the technology. We have designed and developed several opensource do-it-yourself (DIY) head-mounted displays for augmented reality (AR) that cost between $4 to $40. Optical design and simulations were completed using Zemax for a design...

Distributed Applications for Collaborative Augmented Reality

This paper focuses on the distributed architecture of the collaborative augmented reality system Studierstube. The system allows multiple users to experience a shared 3D workspace populated by multiple applications using seethrough head mounted displays or other presentation media such as projection systems. The system design is based on a distributed shared scene graph that alleviates the appl...
